OK

Here's a bloke calling himself Kid Harpoon.

I've seen him a few times in small clubs and he was amazing - thrashing the hell out of a beat up accoustic, singing amazingly strange songs, and doing a fantastic and unusually frenetic cover version of Leonard Cohen's 'First We Take Manhattan': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E9jrOFC-Po

But, wait, that's not the song you judge!

That's to come.

So, I got to meet 'Kid', said how much I liked his stuff, and he said to look out for his first album.

Waited, got it, and was then confused.

Gone was the beat up accoustic for a rather beautiful Gibson electric, and folky, strange Kid Harpoon had now become a blue-eyed soul boy. It reminded me of early Orange Juice, but with a decent singer!

At first I didn't like it because it was so different from what I expected, but I've been playing it in the car and it's a real grower.

Here's the track: Stealing Cars by Kid Harpoon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxKV8CHCoTo

What do you think?

Well I listened to First we take Manahattan first, being a big Leonard Cohen fan, an interesting version.

As for the voting on one I thought it lacked the energy of the first anddid nothing for me 50/100

I quite liked it, but I didn't click through the "Manhattan" cover first, so maybe I would have felt the same as Louise.

Nice tune, not so sure about the lyrical content... but still 70/100

Just got round to listening to it. I would give it 55. The song is a bit lifeless for my tastes. Not awful though

Nobody hated it! Result!

I hope you check him out if he plays in your city/town/village/hamlet/solitary dwelling.

A nice thumping tune, but unfortunately I don't like the singer's voice, he sounded a bit like Morrissey on helium, so for me it can't be more than 65/100 - sorry Lou.

It's pretty good. I like the rhythm of it but it didn't grab me. 70/100
